WHAT DOES A 5% TONER COVER LOOK LIKE WHEN I PRESS ON A SHEET?

If you have already purchased printing supplies, you have probably noticed that the page yield ratings for toner cartridges include a small warning that all ratings are based on a 5% coverage rate.

What does that mean exactly? Why is it important? And how do you know what is the average coverage rate for your print jobs?

When we talk about laser printing, the toner coverage rate is simply the percentage of the page that is coated with toner. Some documents require more toners than others, so the coverage rate will be higher.

Coverage rates are important because they affect the life of the toner cartridges. Toner cartridges contain only a limited amount of toner, so the number of pages a given cartridge prints depends on the amount of toner used per page. Most documents require a coverage rate of 5%, which is what the printing industry uses as a basis for evaluating page performance.

What happens if your average coverage rate is 10% instead of 5%?

With an average coverage rate of 10%, you use twice as much toner per page, so your page yield will be halved. Similarly, with an average coverage rate of 2.5%, you use two times less toner per page, so your page yield will double.

What is your coverage rate, in your opinion? Are you 5%?

One way to find out is to ask your printer. Most laser printers come with a built-in report set that tells you all kinds of interesting things like the average toner coverage rate. For Lexmark, Dell, and IBM laser printers, the coverage rate is in a report called Device Statistics. Although the steps to find the report differ from one printer to another, most require you to navigate to Menu> Reports> Device Statistics. Or you can see a button with a green diamond, which you can hold down for 5 seconds. Coverage history must be printed on a number (usually no% sign).

Here are some examples of what the 5% and 10% coverage rates look like in the real world. The rate of 5% is about half a page of text and titles in bold. The 10% rate is about a full page of text with a small graphic or image.
