How to Repair a Paper Jam in a Printer

When you are working with a printer, paper jams are inevitable. The following is a general guide to help you remove jammed paper from a number of places. Although most modern printers are similar in design, you may need to slightly adjust the following steps, depending on the model of your printer.

Attention: When possible, avoid pulling jammed paper out from under the front cover, as it could damage the printer. Instead, pull it out from the back of the printer or from the paper tray.

Locate and remove any paper jammed in the loading tray

  1. Remove any loose paper in the loading tray.
  2. Press the Resume button on the front of the printer.

Note: If the paper jam is cleared, make sure that the printer carriage can move freely. Otherwise, continue with the steps below.

  1. Remove jammed paper one sheet at a time, starting in the middle.
  2. Check for any remaining bits of paper.

Clear any jam from the rear of the printer

If you cannot access the paper jam from the loading tray, follow the instructions to clear the paper from the rear of the printer. Generally, the back of the printer is equipped with a rear access door or a two-sided printing accessory.

Removing a rear access panel

  1. Locate the knob or the ACCESS TAB on the back of the printer. If it is a tab, move it to the unlocked position.
  2. Remove the panel and carefully pull out the jammed paper.
  3. Locate and remove any remaining bits of paper.
  4. Replace and secure the rear panel.

Removing the two-sided printing accessory to clear the paper jam

  1. Press both RELEASE buttons on either end of the module at the same time and remove it.
  2. Remove the panel and carefully pull out the jammed paper.
  3. Locate and remove any remaining bits of paper.
  4. Push the module back and snap it into place.
  5. Press the button located on the top of the module and open the door.
  6. Remove the panel and carefully pull out the jammed paper.
  7. Locate and remove any remaining bits of paper.
  8. Close the rear module door.

Note: If the paper jam is cleared, make sure that the printer carriage can move freely. Otherwise, skip to the next section below.

Pulling the paper out from under the front cover

If all the earlier steps have failed, you may try to remove the jammed paper by pulling it out from under the front cover carefully and slowly. Remember, as indicated above, this step is not recommended and should be considered only as a last resort.

Tip: If you have a laser printer, you may need to remove the toner cartridge before you can access the paper
