How to Print From a Smart Phone or a Tablet

Android devices can do just about anything these days. They can do everything from music storage to massive Word document handling. Another interesting feature is the ability to print from a phone or a tablet.

Not having a Wi-Fi enabled printer doesn’t mean you cannot print wirelessly. In fact, Google has created a way to link your printer with your Chrome account on your phone/tablet, so that you can move and print with ease.

Google Cloud Print

Most printers can print via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or another quick method, but not everyone has access to one of these. This is where Google Cloud Print comes into play. You can connect your printer to the Internet by getting it registered, you can then use it from anywhere in the world as long as you have a good connection, and you can print from a phone or a tablet device.

Keep in mind that while most printers can be operated via Google Cloud Print, some cannot. To save you the trouble of finding out the hard way, Google has compiled a list of printers that are compatible with Cloud Print.

  1. Launch Google Chrome on your computer.
  2. Log in to Google Chrome if you are not automatically logged in.
  3. Click the Menu button (represented by an icon showing three horizontal lines, or three small dots if you use a Chromebook) at the upper right corner of the window.
  4. Select Settings.
  5. Click Show Advanced Settings.
  6. Scroll down to the Google Cloud Print section and click Manage.
  7. Click Add Printers.
  8. You will be redirected to a shortlist of all available printers. Simply check the ones you want to add, click Add Printers. It should detect your printer, and the job is done!

How to Print From an Android Phone

Some phones are sold with Google Cloud Print already built into the software. You can still get the application if your phone doesn’t include it. Download the app and follow the installation instructions.

Once you have Google Cloud Print installed, you do not need to launch the app itself to start printing, think of it as an add-on to your phone’s software. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes extremely convenient. Make sure, however, that the Google account linked to your phone is the same one you used on Google Chrome to connect to the printer in the previous step.

  1. Open a document you would like to print (a Google Drive document or an image stored on your phone, for example).
  2. Select the Menu button (the three dots in the upper right corner).
  3. Click Print and it will redirect you to a new page.
  4. Click the down arrow found to the right of “Save as PDF.”
  5. Select the printer you want to print from. If you cannot find it, click on All Printers to get a list of all the printers you have connected.
  6. Once you are done, click on the Print button (the light blue circle that looks like a printer). You are all set!
