Cartridge NOT RECOGNIZED by Printer Error! What You Can Do About It

Is your Samsung, HP, Brother, Canon, Ricoh, or Epson printer not recognizing your new ink or toner cartridge? A lot of people experience this error when printing. This is actually one of the most common issues in the printing world.

Why does this happen?

There may be times when, after installing a new ink or toner cartridge in your printer, a message might pop up such as:

  • Toner is not compatible.
  • Printer Cartridge Not Detected” or your printer cannot detect any ink.
  • A low or empty level of ink and toner display on your computer.
  • An HP printer displaying “HP cartridges locked” or “cartridge protection enabled.
  • A message on your printer warning “No Cartridge Installed” (or words to that effect).

These messages could be caused by the following:

  • Internal memory reset:

When you install a new cartridge, your printer should recognize it automatically and reset its internal memory, ensuring that it displays full ink and toner levels, etc. However, the printer sometimes doesn’t do that correctly and instead makes you think that no cartridge is currently inserted.

Protective strips:

If you haven't removed the protective covers or plastic strips that are attached to the new cartridge when you take it out of its packaging, the printer will surely fail to register the new cartridge, creating a bit of a problem for you.

  • HP Cartridge Protection enabled
  • Ink cartridge not inserted properly

So here is what you need to do to try and resolve the problem

First, do not panic. No matter who the supplier is, there shouldn’t be any reason why a decent quality original or compatible cartridge wouldn’t work with your printer so, with a little patience, you will get it fixed. Try the following to correct the problem.

How to reset the printer’s memory:

  • Remove your new cartridge and replace it with the old one.
  • Leave your printer and go do something else for 10 minutes.
  • Replace the old cartridge with the new again. These two steps alone often solve the problem, so check if your printer now recognizes your new cartridges. However, if you still experience problems, remove the new cartridge. Make sure you place it in a clean and safe place where the cartridge and the surface will not be damaged.
  • Turn the printer off using its power button.
  • Unplug your printer’s power cord. It is important to do both steps 4 and 5 separately because some printers remain in standby mode if you only turn off the power button on the printer’s control panel.
  • Leave your printer like this for about 10 minutes.
  • Plug in your printer’s power cord again (but do not immediately press the power button).
  • Insert your new cartridge.
  • Press the power button on your printer. The issue is probably resolved.
